Crosland was to remain at the DEA for only four months. The failure of Patrick Gordon Walker to win a seat in the House, either in the General Election (at Smethwick) or in a hastily-arranged by-election (at Leytonstone), meant that Harold Wilson decided to drop his extraparliamentary Foreign Secretary and to appoint Michael Stewart in his place. Anthony Crosland was invited to succeed Michael Stewart as Secretary of State in the Department of Education and Science. It was his first Cabinet-level position and his longest-single ministerial posting.

Anthony Crosland died in the Radcliffe Infirmary on 19 February 1977. He was 58 - almost the same age as Gaitskell at the time of his death. The immediate cause was irreversible damage resulting from a stroke suffered on Sunday the 13th. Two days before that he had been to the Radcliffe Infirmary in a different role, to visit Philip Williams, also felled by a stroke. Crosland's ashes were scattered by Susan in the Humber off Grimsby on 4 March 1977. Three days later a Memorial Service was held in Westminster Abbey.

Crosland's tenure at Education was at any rate an eventful one. In 1965 the Social Science Research Council (the SSRC, later the ESRC) was set up to fund the investigation of economy and society: Crosland saw to it that his friend, Michael Young, was made its first Chairman. In the same year the eleven-plus examination and the grammar/non-academic divide were challenged by Circular 10/65, which employed the persuasive word 'request' rather than the directional word 'require' in its campaign to convert the local educational authorities to the comprehensive principle.
