It avoided ‘artificial’ rewards and punishments, making knowledge playful and amusing for young children, and using many demonstrative objects for learning, especially in the chief courses – natural science, geography, and history. 5 And Owen continued to make money, enriching his new partners, including Jeremy Bentham, for whom New Lanark was one of his few successful investments. Owen soon became aware, however, that there were major obstacles to extending this plan even to infant education beyond New Lanark.

Elections in particular he opposed as divisive. ‘Socialism’ implied the cultivation of the sociable virtues and the abolition of such contests, the removing of ‘the germ of all party from society’, as Owen once put it. The first step in this direction was accepting the doctrine of non-responsibility, thereby ceasing to be angry at others for their behaviour. ‘Individualism’ (the term was coined in the mid-1830s) implied the competitive assertion of self against the collective, including, for Owen, class against class.

The middle and late 1820s also saw the publication of the main works by Owen's early followers and associates, notably several books by the Irish landowner William Thompson, especially An Inquiry into the Principles of the Distribution of Wealth Most Conducive to Human Happiness (1824) and Labour Rewarded (1827), and the newspaper editor John Gray's Lecture on Human Happiness (1825) and The Social System (1831). The latter in particular popularized a non-communitarian ideal of socialism in which co-operative labour and exchange guaranteed an equitable reward for labour, and national economic planning and production assured a rational balance of supply and demand.
